Nike releases a sneaker capsule honoring Tinker Hatfield, the man behind the first Air Max 1

The capsule includes 3 models inspired by old sketches of the designer

Short Bio

Tinker Hatfield joined Nike as a designer in 1985 after completing his architectural studies at Oregon University. By applying his architectural spirit to sneaker design, he became the father of many popular Nike silhouettes. Among others, he created the Air Max 1, the Air Jordan 3 to 15 and the Nike Air Trainer. He has slowly become one of the most influential sneaker designers the world has ever seen. Over the years, he rose through the ranks of the company until becoming Nike’s vice president of design and special projects.

The Sneakers

Nike is releasing 3 different sneakers to pay homage to Tinker’s work. The 3 models are inspired by the designer’s sketches of the Air Max 1. The sneakers themselves take the appearance of a rough draft. Tinker’s design notes, such as measurements, colors and views are handwritten all around the upper. The sneakers, marketed under the names “Sketch to Shelf” and “Schematic”, really walk you through the designer’s initial vision.

Nike “Sketch To Shelf” Sneaker

The Sketch To Shelf sneaker, which comes in a white and red colorway, is the main model of the collaboration. It brings Thinker’s original Air Max 1 sketches to life. It goes so far as to introduce Hatfield’s first Air Max logo concept. The inner lining presents a “SKETCH, PROPERTY OF NIKE NOT FOR RESALE” print.

Tinker “Schematic” Black

The black colorway of the “Schematic” sneaker is definitely our editor’s favorite. Its design is super stylish and versatile, which means it and can be worn with almost anything. Just like the “Sketch To Shelf”, the black “Schematic” features many of Tinker’s design notes.

Tinker Schematic White

The white Nike Schematic sneaker looks a lot like the black version, but it has it’s own handwritten prints. Its white and black colorway makes it an amazing street style sneaker to wear during summer.
