Renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has teamed up with ASICS to create a Bamboo makeover of the Metaride AMU Sneaker. The collaboration, named Kengo Kuma x ASICS Metaride will release just in time for the holidays.

As a master of space design and unconventional fabrication, Kuma has brought his signature to the forefront of his first-ever footwear collaboration.

Indeed, he built an eco-friendly design inspired by a traditional Japanese bamboo crafting technique known as ‘yatara knitting’.

Kuma’s Metaride AMU is both a running shoe and an architectural masterpiece. Plus, the architect’s first-ever footwear collaboration is built on Asics’ most technologically advanced shoe model.

In fact, Kuma combines a performance monosock with overlays strategically placed to hold the foot steady. A toggle lacing system secures everything in place. Also, the strips cleverly form an Asics graphic on the mid-foot.

Most innovations come with the lower part of the sneaker. The sole is made of two interesting parts. The first one is a tan midsole made of an ecologically conscious wood-derived textile. The second one is a clean white outsole meant to balance the complex upper.

Finally, a shock-absorbing gel-material is placed on the heel. It enhances cushioning for more comfortable running. Take a closer look at the Kengo Kuma x Asics Metaride AMU sneaker in the gallery just below.

“I made running shoes as the smallest of our architecture. It became a moving architecture that follows a complex movement that combines bending and twisting”
